In Tim Chester’s book, A Meal with Jesus, he writes, “When you combine a passion for Jesus with shared meals, you create potent gospel opportunities.” I have experienced these words of Chester during a meal with two of my friends recently. A #throwback to two months ago, I met up with them at Compass One food court for tea break. I have known these two friends for 30 years. That day we ordered fried carrot cake and hot drinks. We ate and talked, updating each other about what is going on in......

Dear Brothers and Sisters of NLC, Shalom! Once a month, I serve together with two or three co-workers in the Care Corner Senior Activity Centre at Blk 5 Toa Payoh. We led the seniors to worship together and took this opportunity to sow gospel seeds by sharing Bible stories with them. Eventually, I often heard about the good news that some seniors decided to believe in Jesus. Then, they would go to different churches for worship or senior gatherings, and some were called home to be with our Lord. Around 2005, the......

Dear Brothers & Sisters of NLC, peace be with you. Last week on my birthday, my friend, Wan Chung (允中) presented me a gift of a calligraphy that he wrote: “同心而共济,终始如一“. This is not easy to translate. Based on his context, I think it roughly means “Unity of hearts and hands is what it takes to succeed”. These words were part of a Song Dynasty (宋朝) essay written by the famous Chinese poet, (欧阳修) Ouyang Xiu. I appreciate my friend’s birthday gift and I was curious about the origins and contexts of......

We give thanks to the Lord for Newton Life Church – our church celebrated its 65th Anniversary on 4 October. This year, 2020, has turned out to be one that no one expected. Lives have been lost and many have been displaced geographically, economically and spiritually. What we used to experience, is now very different. For NLC, we have also been impacted. As we looked back over this last 6 months, God has kept our church family safe but the church family has also been impacted. We are living in an unfamiliar......

Dear Brothers and Sisters of NLC, Shalom! This week, I’d like to share about our seminarian intern Jennet’s experience of leading our young people to serve the community. “As part of my school spirituality project, we are to identify the needs in the community and invite others to join us. There are many things that our group wanted to do. However, due to the Covid19 situation, we do not have many choices. So, we decided to do beach cleaning at East Coast Park on 8th September. Our team was formed with 4......

What is so special about this blue gas cylinder? Last Sunday sermon, from Psalm 138, reminds us to praise and give thanks to God for His goodness in our lives. One of David’s reasons for giving thanks to God is that God answered him when he called (Psalm 138:3). Indeed God is faithful, not just to David but also to us, and He will surely answer us when we sincerely call upon Him. But have we really call upon Him and sincerely ask? There were very 3 specific requests that I asked......

Dear brothers and sisters, greetings and Shalom in Christ! From the past mid-week Pastoral Addresses written by our young Pastors, Ps Simon and Ps Enos, I have read about their life experiences and thoughts in their thirties. Pastor Simon shared his deep conviction of God’s Word guiding him in life. Ps Enos shared about Psalm 90 and his quest for God’s purpose in his life. For me, I am turning 70 next year! Yet, I share similar thoughts and mindsets with our two young Pastors. I thank God for allowing me to......

Dear NLC brothers and sisters, Shalom! Every Chinese New Year, I would visit our church’s elderly as well as our brothers and sisters’ pre-believing elderly parents. During CNY, most of the seniors welcome our visitations. CNY is an opportunity to reach out and build new friendships. I would also keep in touch with them after CNY visits. Eventually, these new friends would become my target audience to spread the gospel. In the past few years, I visited the parents of Sister Sharon Low. When Mr. Low was ill and hospitalised, I would......

Over the last 30 years in my life, I am deeply convinced that God’s children can only live in God’s Word, walk in God’s Word, serve by God’s Word, race with God’s Word, and live by God’s Word. The world is surrounded by darkness. Yet, light comes from God’s Word. Without it, we can’t move a single step ahead in our life. Jesus said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) Whenever you read the Bible or listen to......

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. This passage (D667) reminded me that God desires us to teach His word diligently to our children. It applies to all disciple-makers in the family of God too – We are all called to teach God’s word to fellow disciples......
