Connect and Care for our Community

Dear Brothers and Sisters of NLC,

Shalom! Once a month, I serve together with two or three co-workers in the Care Corner Senior Activity Centre at Blk 5 Toa Payoh. We led the seniors to worship together and took this opportunity to sow gospel seeds by sharing Bible stories with them. Eventually, I often heard about the good news that some seniors decided to believe in Jesus. Then, they would go to different churches for worship or senior gatherings, and some were called home to be with our Lord. Around 2005, the late Brother Wu Qinhua had also joined this ministry.

Participants of this Care Corner were the elderly from poor families. Previously, NLC’s Care Ministry had arranged a few community programs with the Centre. Before the pandemic, some of the seniors there attended our Senior Fellowship regularly. Due to the pandemic, our on-site meetings have been suspended, but I have not given up connecting and caring for them through phone calls, visits, and festive gifts.

Brother Lin Yuewen has been attending our Senior Fellowship for many years, yet all the while he refused to get baptized. In compliance with Covid-19 Phase 1 safety measures, physical home visits were not allowed, and hospital visits were under certain restrictions. Over the past few months, I called our seniors and seekers every day to offer them practical, emotional and spiritual assistance. One day, I contacted Brother Lin. He told me that he had just come out of the hospital, and I asked, “What happened?” He said, “I have had severe diarrhea after eating a fried oyster omelette, and was hospitalized for ten days.”

I visited Brother Lin in September and asked if he desired baptism (he had once mentioned that he wanted to get baptized this year). He was ready and immediately responded, “Can I get baptized at home?” I said, “Yes.” Currently, he has started his Baptism Preparation class. Brothers and Sisters, the Bible tells us: Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9) May the Lord help us to be fruitful.

In His Service,
Rev Choo Yee Kee
